All-Stars cook, dine and tour the Ohio Governor’s Residence with Mrs. Kasich and Local Matters

COLUMBUS, OH –Today All-Star Ambassadors will travel to the Ohio Governor’s Residence and Heritage Gardens to prepare—and share—a healthy meal with Ohio First Lady Karen Kasich, while learning about healthy food choices from Columbus, Ohio-based non-profit Local Matters.

With the help of Local Matters, All-Stars will get a chance to cook a seasonal meal and tour the Heritage Gardens. This is the third year Mrs. Kasich has invited the student ambassadors from each After-School All-Stars (ASAS) Ohio chapter to participate in this annual spring tradition.

”Hosting my fellow All-Stars ambassdors at the Governor’s Residence each year is one my absolute favorite events,” Mrs. Kasich said. “It’s my way of thanking these students for their leadership and commitment to the program, and expressing my gratitude to After-School All-Stars for the tremendous opportunities they provide students at each Ohio chapter.”

Currently serving students at nine total schools in Columbus, Toledo and Dayton, each After-School All-Stars Ohio chapter also participates in Mrs. Kasich’s Time For 10! program, encouraging students to take brief physical activity breaks to improve fitness and concentration. Time For 10! is a free resource made available through a partnership between Mrs. Kasich and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. ASAS Ohio also partners with Local Matters, a Central Ohio non-profit that aims to increase community access to healthy foods and educate individuals on healthy and sustainable food choices.

“We are not only educating children to be healthy we are giving them opportunities to put that education into practice,” Aslyne Rodriguez, Co-Executive Director, After-School All-Stars Ohio. “We bring together community partners in different areas of expertise to give our All-Stars a holistic view of what it means to create a healthy lifestyle.”
