After-School All-Stars Launches Chapter in Tampa
With major funding from the New York Life Foundation
And support from Mayor Bob Buckhorn and the City of Tampa Parks & Recreation

Tampa, FL (May 20, 2016) – After-School All-Stars (ASAS), with support from the New York Life Foundation, Mayor Bob Buckhorn and the City of Tampa, is proud to launch its newest chapter in Tampa Bay today. Tampa Bay is the fourth of six ASAS chapters to be launched thanks to a $4 million, four-year grant from the New York Life Foundation. The multi-year grant is the largest in ASAS’s 20+ year history.

Mayor Bob Buckhorn and the City of Tampa Parks & Recreation Department have been instrumental in bringing ASAS to Tampa Bay. They supported the program from the beginning and connected ASAS with Memorial Middle School, the site of the first ASAS Tampa program. Tampa is the third Florida city to host ASAS and Memorial Middle School the 41st Florida school to receive its comprehensive program helping students succeed in school and in life.

“We can’t do this work alone,” said Arnold Schwarzenegger, founder of After-School All-Stars. “It takes partners like the New York Life Foundation, the City of Tampa and the Hillsborough County School District to expand our programing, reach more schools, and help more students. It’s fantastic to see everyone getting to work in Tampa.”

Event Format: Interactive program where students team up with guests to provide hands-on lessons showcasing what they’ve learned about flying drones, playing lacrosse and cooking healthy meals.

Today’s launch celebration at Memorial Middle School will showcase a few of the fun activities that regularly take place in ASAS programs. Guests including local government officials, agents from New York Life, and local business leaders will team up with students to try their hand at flying drones, playing lacrosse and cooking healthy meals. Speakers from ASAS, the New York Life Foundation and the local community will explain why they so passionately support after-school education and how it transforms communities for the better by keeping kids safe and engaged, providing parents the peace of mind to focus on their jobs.

Despite after-school program participation increases over the last decade, a recent Afterschool Alliance household survey found that for every child enrolled in an afterschool program, two more would like to enroll if one were available. This is especially true in Florida: 46% of children not enrolled would likely join a program if they could.

Nothing proves this point better than the fact that 99% of After-School All-Star’s “We Are Ready” students were promoted on time to ninth grade. Moreover, ASAS engages kids in constructive activities during the after-school hours of 3-6pm, a time when most parents are still working and youth crime and experimentation with risky behaviors dramatically increases.”

After-School All-Stars provides this opportunity for some of Tampa’s most vulnerable kids due to no fault of their own. We are committed to creating a learning environment that is safe and conducive for high academic achievement, enrichment and wellness activities. This holistic approach will give every student a chance to grow, prosper and serve their communities and beyond – at no cost to the student,” said Michael Brown, Executive Director of ASAS Tampa. Brown grew up in an urban, low-income neighborhood and has dedicated his 27-year career to non-profit leadership and youth development programs. Brown oversees ASAS programs, including STEM curriculum, career exploration, service learning, sports and fitness. Certified teachers provide academic coaching and students receive dinner at no cost. The targeted outcomes are lower absenteeism, improved academic performance, and greater motivation to graduate from high school and attend college.
