Columbus, OH – Today, over 80 participants from across the state will travel to The Ohio State University for CampUs, a weeklong work-readiness program organized by After-School All-Stars Ohio (ASAS Ohio). Each summer, ASAS Ohio provides this unique summer experience to at-risk youth from low-income communities across Ohio. CampUs is designed to equip each student with the tools needed to succeed in high school and to inspire long-term career planning.
During an intensive week at The Ohio State University, students live in college housing, eat at campus cafeterias, and attend academic classes. This provides them with a typical college experience and improved study skills that help them succeed in high school. Students also receive comprehensive career counseling and mentoring from corporate, civic and vocational professionals.
“High school graduation and success beyond high school feel unobtainable to too many students in America,” said Sienna Daniel, State Director of ASAS Ohio. “Programs like CampUs help make high school diplomas and careers a reality by giving students the tools they need to succeed in high school and to think beyond it.”
“Due to generous financial and mentoring support from sponsors like Walmart, LBrands, AT&T and JCPenney, we have been able to expand the program to reach more students than ever before,” added Ms. Daniel.
CampUs was launched in 2010 to help supplement ASAS Ohio’s school year work-readiness initiative We Are Ready, and to help protect students from the “summer-slide”. The summer-slide, a primary contributor to high school dropout rates, is the tendency for children (especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds) to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year.
CampUs takes place at The Ohio State Univesity from June 5-June 10. Media are invited to attend CampUs activities and to interview students and staff.
